SACRED HEART PARISH
Waterlooville

A SAINT for the WEEK

June 21st. St. Aloysius Gonzaga.

Jesuit novice (1568-1591). The son of the Marquis of Castiglione, he was intended for a military career, but spiritual reading during an illness inclined him in a different direction and to the annoyance of his father, who tried to apply all sorts of dissuasions, he joined the Jesuit novitiate in 1585. He was a model novice, and devoted much of his energy to the care of the sick. It was while working in a plague hospital near the Forum in Rome that he caught the disease and died (1591). He was canonised in 1726 as a model of dedication to the religious life.
