SACRED HEART PARISH
Waterlooville
| A SAINT for the WEEK April
17th.
St. Donan. Donan and his companions were martyrs for Christ on the island of Eigg in the Inner Hebrides in 618. Donan was a disciple of St. Columba of Iona and was the founder of the Eigg community. On Easter night, while Mass was being celebrated, a horde of Viking robbers arrived on the island, drove the monks from their church to their refectory and set it alight. They were apparently provoked by a woman on the island who maintained she had lost some of her pasturage rights to the monks and turned to the raiders for help. The place name Kildonan is a popular one in North and West Scotland. |
