St. Gilbert of Caithness (died 1245), who as a large-scale landlord and financial overseer also built the Cathedral of Dornoch and was appointed bishop after his predecesssor was murdered in a dispute over tithes.  He built hospices, won many over by his preaching, and brought order to a  part of the land where anarchy had long prevailed.
