SACRED HEART PARISH
Waterlooville
| A SAINT for the WEEK
July 24th. St. John Boste. Born in
Cumbria in 1543 and educated at Oxford, he became a Catholic in 1576 and
was trained at the English College at Reims in France, being ordained in
1581. His activity ministry
extended over some ten years, mostly in the North, often disguised as a
servant in the livery of Lord Montacute.
He was betrayed in 1593, sent the Tower, and then tried at Durham
in 1594. He denied that he
was a traitor: “My function is to invade souls, not to meddle with
temporal invasions”. Found
guilty, he was put to death at Bryburn, near Durham, only July 24 1594; he
was canonised as one of the Forty Martyrs in 1970. |
