SACRED HEART PARISH
Waterlooville
A SAINT FOR THE WEEK. January 22nd. St. Vincent. The first declared martyr of Spain, during the
persecution of Diocletian in 304. He
was a deacon, trained to serve in the church in Saragossa [Zaragoza] in
Eastern Spain, and was subject to imprisonment, starvation, the rack and a
hot gridiron (in the manner of St. Laurence) in an effort to make him
sacrifice to the gods. His
fame and relics were taken far and wide – according to St. Augustine
“wherever the name of Christ was known”; in England, notably to
Abingdon on Thames-side, thanks to the acquisition of relics by an Abbot,
Faricius. |
