SACRED HEART PARISH
Waterlooville

A SAINT FOR THE WEEK

December 10th. St. Eulalia.

A famous early martyr (304) of Merida in Spain, praised by Augustine, the hymnwriter Prudentius, Bede, Aldhelm of Sherborne and many others. A 12-year old, ordered to sacrifice by Emperor Diocletian’s decree, she refused, rejected the flattery of the local judge and accused him of destroying souls, trampled on the cake which constituted the sacrifical offering and was burnt alive. Snow fell over her body (and nowhere else) until she was buried by fellow Christians.
