SACRED HEART PARISH
Waterlooville
A SAINT FOR THE WEEK. February 14th. St. Valentine. Although, as we have recently been reminded in the press, the shrines of this famous saint are claimed by both Dublin and Glasgow, he is also enshrined at Terni, between Rome and Assisi, where he was bishop in the 3rd century and died a martyr. There is no obvious reason why he should be connected with courting couples. Some say it is a left-over from the pagan Roman feast of Lupercal, celebrated at the same time of year. Another tradition is that February 14th is first day on which birds take their mates. He has been sidetracked in the Roman Calendar on the grounds that his historical details are dubious, and his place taken by the missionaries to Eastern Europe, SS. Cyril and Methodius. But with all due respect to these worthy gentlemen, nobody sends Cyril & Methodius cards with cryptic anonymous messages, do they? |
