SACRED HEART PARISH

| THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK -
Commencing 4th December 1994 This weekend our gospel introduces John, son of Zechariah. The word of God came to him in the wilderness. His stern words reveal the man and his background. The wild environment gave him his imagery and illustration, but it was the prophet Isaiah that provided John the Baptist with the core of his message. Some believe that John spent time with the community of the Essenes at Qumran, who hid their precious scrolls in the cliff side caves so that they would not be found by the Roman patrols. These scrolls were only found by chance as recently as 1947. Perhaps the most prized writing was that of the prophet Isaiah. It was certainly in existence in John's day, and was the basis of his preaching. John lived a simple lifestyle, and preached about a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin. John used the stern terms of the Old Testament, rather than the compassion and persuasion of the New, but he expected his followers to make a definite commitment, a total transformation, a conversion. John's message is as relevant today as it was when he cried aloud in the Jordan wilderness. There is no better way to prepare the way of the Lord than by reflection and repentance. At this time of year, many of us prepare ourselves by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or as it used to be known 'confession'. This should not be seen as a time of looking backwards but more of an opportunity for us to look forward, with honesty and humility, and to discern the areas in out own lives that require true conversion. God doesn't want to hear about all that we have done wrong, but he is willing to help us try again in the areas where we could improve. Over the next few weeks there will be additional times publicised to celebrate God's forgiveness through this sacrament, and of course the priests will be happy to make an appointment to see people if the advertised times are not convenient. There may be only 20 shopping days left until Christmas, so don't leave it until the last minute, and dont get caught in the rush!! |
