THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK - Commencing 1st January 1995

Today we observe the solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, perhaps the oldest Marian feast of the Church. This is a natural theme having just celebrated the birth of her son Jesus, we now acknowledge the part Mary played in fulfilling the ancient blessing promised to Israel. As we reflect upon today's feast we note that it is the Octave Day of Christmas, the day on which Jesus would have been circumcised, which was the sign of being incorporated into the People of God, and given his name which means 'Saviour'.

It is important for us to mark this day since Jesus, the Word made flesh who dwelt among us, did so because Mary, his mother, responded to the invitation of God, which came through the message of the angel Gabriel. Though Mary conceived 'through the power of the Holy Spirit', God became a human being because she gave birth to him in a natural way. As St. Paul tells us, he was 'born of a woman'.

On the subject of women, today is also World Day of Prayer for Peace, and Pope John Paul has chosen 'Woman: Educator for Peace' for the theme of this year's World Day of Peace. It is a recognition of the role of women as peacemakers, and the Pope is encouraging them to play an active part in overcoming the situations where peace does not exist. Later this year there will be a United Nations conference on: "Woman and her activity to promote lawfulness, development and peace", and the Pope's theme is an invitation for a deeper realisation of the role of women, (both by themselves and with everyone else), of their value and vocation as peace builders. It is also an encouragement to us all, male and female alike, to be committed to working for peace - in our homes, in our neighbourhood, and throughout the rest of the world.

Peace is a gift from God, and the hope of peace should enable us to pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten people everywhere to overcome conflict and create true reconciliation.

'May the peace of God which is beyond all understanding keep your minds and hearts in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.' [Philippians 4:7]

A happy and peaceful New Year to you all.
