SACRED HEART PARISH

| THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Commencing 11th January 1998 What have the following got in common? Joining the scouts, the National Lottery, family photos, the ecu, Zoroastrianism, the Wombles. Bob Hoskins. Joan Osbourne's song "One of Us", Bryan Adams song "Everything I do (I do it for you)", the driving formula of 'Mirror-signal-manoeuvre', the films "Babe", "The Singing Nun", "The Sound of Music", "Independence Day", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Nuns on the Run", Sim-City 2000, Man Utd, McDonalds, the Jordache trial on "Brookside", Euro 96, Thomas Merton, Oaklands School's Silver Jubilee, looking at churches when on holiday, the FT Index, the World Wrestling Federation, Anthony de Mello, Princess Diana, "Blind Date", saying mass as a child, hanging baskets and power drills, Cardinals Bernadin and Hume, John Major's "back to basics" campaign, Tony Blair's election victory, the visits of Presidents Mandela and Clinton, goldfish, the Spice Girls song "Spice Up Your Life", carrier bags, lea-bags, pop posters, the Mir space station, the relics in our church, Mother Teresa, school cleverclogs, unfortunate football managers, Robin Hood, Snow White, swimming lessons, the Teletubbies, Elvis Presley calendars, Tony Bullimore, the double meaning of communion, wearing spectacles, Anneka Rice, all cynics who are loved by God, the Taleban, the actor Cuba Gooding Jr, the London Underground's "Mind the Gap" warning, the Lightning Seeds' record "Three Lions", taxi-drivers, burglars, driving instructors, Phil Collins, Billy Conllelly, the Archbishop of Cardiff, a gunge tank in Denmead, feeling fed up, William Horwood's novels "The Duncton Chronicles", Edward Heath's 'winter of discontent' and the record "Perfect day"? The answer is that over the last few years they have all been used by myself to help us understand the gospel and/or some aspect of our faith. Some proved better than others and I know, from your many letters and cards, which ones they were. As I take leave of you this weekend I do so fully persuaded by the above list that almost anything and anyone can be used to help us grow in faith. If the above list also persuades you, then you will already know the challenge awaiting you. Do I need to spell it out ? DG |
