Denmead
Horse Shows

We are sad to announce the death of Philomena Beecher on Easter Saturday.

Phil was an active member of Denmead Swings and Things since the early 1990s taking a major part in organising and running the Denmead Sports Festival and other smaller activities. She became involved with Denmead Horse Show in the mid 1990s helping in many capacities and taking over as show secretary upon the demise of Robin Archer in 1999.

Competitors will remember her commitment, energy and forceful personality. She could be relied upon to help anyone in difficulties whether it was rearranging their classes to accommodate clashes or other members of their family or helping to load a recalcitrant horse at the end of the day. Phil never shirked decision making or applying rules when necessary and her forceful tones could often be heard ringing out across the showground when someone flouted a safety rule. Phil and her family were also mainstays in helping to put the show up and clear the ground afterwards.

During Phil’s years as show secretary the shows developed into the present format with the very successful Denmead Little Show in July and the Fun Event in September becoming regular events. Phil will be greatly missed her efforts not only helped to keep the shows going providing a great deal of fun for local riders but also helped Denmead Swings and Things to provide quality play facilities in Ashling Park, Denmead, the latest addition being to play a major role in the provision of the skate park. Recently Denmead Swings and Things took over the umbrella role as providers/organisers (with Denmead Parish Council) of Denmead Activity Nights – our junior youth club – helping to provide much needed facilities for the 9 – 13 year age group.

Phil will be a hard act to follow however this year’s shows will go ahead. We will be needing extra people to fill the gaps left by Phil so if anyone would like to be involved in any capacity please contact Felicity on 023 9226 1977 or email felicity@denmeadhorseshows.co.uk – Experience is not necessary, enthusiasm and a sense of humour help.

Volunteers needed to help

  • on the day in the secretary’s tent with paperwork, stewarding, parking, catering
  • before the day erecting rings, painting jumps, etc
  • after the day clearing up the field, etc also secretarial help with records, results, etc.

Whether you have a few hours or a lot of time your help will be appreciated.
